Nothing happened during my session. Did it still work?

Many different people come to energy healing for various reasons. Some people are incredibly sensitive to the energy, have done spiritual work in the past, and have a natural sensitivity, whilst others have never experienced energy work or healing energy flowing through them before. But does it really matter if you feel anything during the session, and does feeling nothing mean that it didn’t work?


Similarly to how the body is always pumping blood around our bodies, our stomach is breaking down food and our kidneys are processing waste, the healing energy received during the session is always working, even if we cannot feel it. Although we cannot feel these biological processes happening within our bodies, they still continue. The same is true for energy healing.


Sensing energy, just like going to the gym is like muscle building, can be built with repetition. It’s also similar to other hobbies and skills. Some people can have a natural sensitivity, but with practise we all have the capacity to develop our abilities to feel further. Even the most energetically sensitive person can continue to build their sensing skills.

The benefits of being sensitive to energy include energetic autonomy. You begin to notice the energies around you that were already there, how they affect you, and from this you can begin to change this, resulting in a change in yourself.


When receiving energy healing, we have to look at the reasons why we are doing the healing work. Are we engaging in this work to experience something in the session or to see benefits in our lives outside the session? Although many of my clients have profound experiences during the healing sessions, it’s also true that a small number of people don’t feel anything. It’s interesting because, for me, it’s not really about what happens in the session. Some clients have visions, insights and spiritual phenomena happening in the session; however, I notice that this is not required to receive the benefits of the session. In some sessions, the recipient experienced nothing in the session; however, afterwards, they had a tremendous shift within themselves.


It’s really about what happens in our lives after the session. Although the session has been completed, the energy is still running within the person for a number of days afterwards. As the energy makes changes on the deepest levels of our being, it can take up to a week, in some cases two weeks, to have fully integrated the session that has occurred. The changes happening are often on a subconscious level and relate to our attitude to life, perception, mood and state of being. This in itself can make it difficult to perceive at first for the non-sensitive.


So to answer the question, “Nothing happened during my session. Did it still work?” Yes, each time a person receives healing, the energy is always flowing throughout the session. Becoming sensitive often takes time for those who don’t feel much in the beginning, but as the natural self-healing ability begins to wake up again, even the most non-sensitive person can begin to directly experience something within the session.


In order to start building your sensitivity to healing energy, I have a couple of recommendations. These include:

  • Meditation

  • Connecting with energy daily

  • Learning energy healing to give to others and yourself


Through meditation, we can begin to calm our minds and nervous systems. It can be more difficult for some to feel energy if inside our minds are fast and our nervous system activated. Energy is happening independent of our minds and intellect, so slowing this down allows us to perceive more of it.


Secondly, connecting daily energetically can be an important step in building sensitivity. A practical exercise for this could be feeling into your own energetic field (your aura and energy system) and then picking up a crystal. Crystals are natural energy generators, sort of like batteries. If we engage with crystals by holding them, this begins to change our energy field. By doing this, we are actively building our sensitivity by recognising the relationship between ourselves and healing energy.


The final recommendation I would suggest would be to learn energy healing for yourself. The benefit of doing this is that by training yourself you’re not only learning a skill that aids your spiritual development and health, but you have a constant supply of healing energy available to you to practise sensing, anytime, anywhere. I will always recommend this, as I noticed within myself that what aided my own sensitivity was actually giving healing to others and myself.


These are just a few practical suggestions when it comes to energy healing, but rest assured, if you didn’t feel anything in the session, the healing was still a success and is working on an incredibly deep level, sometimes which we cannot perceive!
